ACTIVITIES & THINGS TO DO IN MAYO
Mayo is home to a very wide range of activities for everyone. The landscape and ocean makes it perfect for outdoor adventurers. There are some perfect escapes for those looking for a relaxed and luxurious trip away - we'll get to that below.
Hiking
01
Mayo is a hikers dream. Yes, you have the famous Croagh Patrick, but the other stunning peaks are not to be ignored around the county. Around the Newport area alone there are some stunning walks and hikes, especially around the greater Nephin area. For more info on these hikes, visit the Nephin Begers page below.
02
Kayking
As the streams and rivers flow from the mountains, many make their way to the Atlantic Ocean. These rivers and streams create the perfect kayaking routes in Co. Mayo. Newport itself is a popular spot for kayaking, especially around Burrishoole Abbey, where you can head for a calm paddle in the waters. See more about kayaking below.
Star Gazing
03
Mayo is home to the first International Dark Sky Park. Located between Nephin National Park and Ballycroy National Park, in Letterkeen the 150km² park is home to some of "the darkest, most pristie skies in the world".
With towns and cities creating so much artificial light, it's difficult to view the beauty of the sky at night. In the Mayo Dark Sky Park, visitors can see up to 4,500 stars twinkling in the sky at night. Along with the other planets in our solar system. So, wrap up and get out to see the sky in all of its glory.
Cycling
04
The Great Western Greenway is known as the famous 44km track from Westport to Achill. This track is the best for those wishing to take a cycle with family from town to town, or those looking for a longer cycle. There are many other cycling events that take place in Mayo throughout the year. Especially charity cycles, like the Mayo Pink Ribbon Cycle that takes place every year. Or the Sea2Summit duathlon event, where entrants cycle and run in Westport. It even includes a run along Croagh Patrick.
Fishing
05
It wouldn't be a coastal county without some strong fishing links. Mayo is a very popular spot for fishing all year round. Visitors may choose to bring their own gear and boats and hit to the bay. Or, if you want to give fishing a try for the first time, trips can be booked regularly. Especially in Newport, fishing trips can be booked out on Clew Bay all year round (weather depending!). Ask John when you check-in for more information.
06
Walking
For any walkers out there, Mayo is ideal. Mayo has various loop walks, and hill walks that can be found here.
For the best trails and loops, talk to John, he'll put you on to some of the best walks around the county.
There are plenty of walking events all year round too, for those interested in walking in groups.
